Playing poker across the world for so many years has led me to all different types of casinos and poker rooms. I’ve played in everything from the most prestigious and legendary locales in Las Vegas and Monaco to the hole-in-the-wall card rooms right off the freeway in middle America.
Around 7 to 8 years ago, I discovered a new casino and card room on the East Coast. Somehow, this casino seems to have flown under the radar for anyone not from the immediate local area. However, with the great action, friendly players and staff, and classy ambiance, it has quickly become one of my favorite spots to play. Let’s talk about MGM National Harbor.
An Underrated Gambling Destination
MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino, located in Oxon Hill, Md., is a premier destination for luxury entertainment and gaming. Having opened in December 2016, the casino boasts a sprawling 135,000 square feet of gaming space, featuring a vast array of slot machines, table games, and a poker room designed to cater to both casual players and high-stakes enthusiasts.
The resort also includes a 308-room hotel, a variety of high-end retail shops, and an assortment of fine dining options created by renowned chefs. Its theater, with a capacity of 3,000, hosts top-tier concerts and events, contributing to the vibrant nightlife of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. MGM National Harbor is not only a gambling haven but also a cultural hub, offering art installations and scenic views of the Potomac River for an all-encompassing entertainment experience.
Why the MGM National Harbor Poker Room Is One Of My Favorites
Personally, I began coming to MGM National Harbor Poker Room in 2017 to play high stakes games and have been thrilled with the evolution of the room over the years. The poker room has been moved off the casino floor and into its own private area on the second floor, and now plays host not only to a myriad of cash games but also regular tournament series.
Under the guidance of Director of Poker Adam Boone, MGM National Harbor runs their signature Potomac Poker Open Series bi-annually in February and August. These series feature a diverse spread of offerings including Pot Limit Omaha, Bounties, Senior Events, and even a Rookie Event, which is a new idea for tournaments where only beginner poker players are allowed to register.
Qualifiers for the major events are available both in person at MGM National Harbor and exclusively online at BetMGM Poker. I try to always make it down for the $3,000 Main Event during these series which usually offers a multi-million dollar guarantee and around $300,000 for 1st place.
Property and Area Recommendations
As for other personal recommendations, hotel rooms at MGM National Harbor can be in high demand on the weekends. If you’re unable to secure a room on property, Old Town Alexandria is only a short drive across the city and offers a great selection of hotels, bars, and restaurants in a historic atmosphere.
Speaking of restaurants, a few of my favorite quick bites on property are Shake Shack in the food court and Ginger near the entrance of the casino. If you have more time and are looking for a more formal meal, Voltaggio Brother Steakhouse is an excellent choice.
All in all, MGM National Harbor offers all the amenities of a Las Vegas-style resort and casino nestled within the hustle and bustle of the Washington D.C. and Maryland area. This area has a rich heritage in poker excellence and has seen local players like Christian Harder, Justin Liberto, and Tony Gregg rise to prominence over the years. The area even lays claim to a WSOP Main Event Champion in Greg Merson.
I’m excited to see what the future holds for MGM National Harbor as we continue to see bigger and better poker offerings. I encourage anyone who’s yet to see this hidden gem to come by and visit the poker room, or play online at BetMGM Poker until you get the chance to check it out.
